PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT: BASSLACED PRESENT DAVID RODIGAN / SHY FX / MS DYNAMITE & MORE

Following a successful run of parties last autumn, club night staple 'Basslaced' are to host a one-off night at South London's 'Fire' tomorrow night. With the focus this time very much placed on exploring the roots of original bass culture, they've enlisted recent MBE and revered DJ David Rogidan, legendary D&B pioneer and Digital Soundboy head Shy FX and iconic UK songstress Ms Dynamite, with support coming from Basslaced residents DJ Take and Jack Swift.

PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT: DOCTOR JEEP - SPHINX

DJ Shiftee's grime-leaning stateside label Hot Mum USA offer up their second release of 2013 today in the shape of Doctor Jeep's 'Sphinx' EP. A bold 4-tracker, including a brooding remix of title track Sphinx from Champion, it is Jeep's working of dark, distorted bass kicks throughout that really make the EP sing. Although title track Sphinx is probably the best evidence of this, 8-bar throwback 'Ghost Dance' is arguably the stand-out track, working samples galore into a sub-low driven frenzy; an ode to Jon E Cash of sorts. Final track 'Numi' is also an interesting cut, fusing Capsa-esque wobble with hip-hop tinged breakdowns - it is a little cluttered but certainly innovative. All in all, more great work from across the pond.

My first track of the day pick for 2013 comes from Keysound protege Wen. 'Commotion', a murky 130 bpm grime cut has been one of the stand out tracks of the year so far, firmly cementing his name as one to watch over the coming months.

PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT: MAJORA - BOSS KEY

February 18th sees rising star Majora, best known for his work alongside recent Black Butter signees My Nu Leng on 'Hips N' Thighs', release his first work of 2013. The 'Boss Key' EP will form the second release from Nottingham stable Tumble Audio and in keeping with Majora's tempo-hopping style, spans the sounds of grime, funky and house with typically ruffneck guile. Alongside relentless title-track 'Boss Key', the stand-out joint is 'Shook', a glorious grime-leaning number complete with ear-shattering breakdowns, both of which are surefire dance-floor gold. A promising start to the year and one that earmarks Majora as one to watch in 2013. Great work!
